Hat Construction
I make me pirate hats from the highest quality wool felt. I use felt rather than leather as felt t'was the most commonly used material fer making hats during the 17th and 18th centuries. This also allows me to keep the price more affordable than leather.
As to the actual process, let me say ye start by shearing a sheep for the wool and then... well... there be many closely guarded steps before reaching completion. Separating the wool fiber, making wool batting, turning that into felt, die bathing, boiling, blocking the hat, stretching, drying, stiffening, steaming, hand-shaping, steaming, drying, reshaping, drying, tacking, applying the oil/wax, curing.
Whew! Tis a very time and labor-intensive process to produce a fine felt hat. Savvy? Ye be getting a true value to be sure me bucko.
Hat Treatments
All styles of wool felt hats be available in three different finishes to fit yer needs and yer budget:
Untreated - This is natural stiffened wool felt, with no treatment. It offers minimal weather resistance and is not recommended for wearing repeatedly in ocean squalls. Economy price range.
Acrylic Treated - This offers moderate weatherproofing and gives the hat a dull matte finish, great for a weathered look. Middle price range.
Oil/Wax Treated - This offers maximum weatherproofing, and most closely replicates the old world method and look of treating seafaring hats with tar pitch, bees wax or animal fat. Without the mess or smell. Captain Jack uses a modern oil/wax hybrid. Upper price range.
Hat Colors
If yer havin' trouble choosing a color or style, take a gander at all me available colors and textures.
Hat Sizing
I make most of me hats on a 23" hat block, as 'tis the most common size head. I can make yer hat in 21", 22", 23", 24" or 25" sizes for those of ye pirates with smaller or bigger noggins. Please indicate your preferred size in the comment section of the order form when placing your order.
One of the beautiful things bout felt is that it can be stretched. If yer hat tis a bit too small ye can easily steam it at yer home and stretch it ta fit yer nogin. If it tis a bit big I suggest ye wear a scarf or bandanna to complete yer pirate look. So, choose the size that will most closely fit.
